  • Brewvies Cinema Pub 677 South 200 West Salt Lake City, UT 84101 (map)

NEW DATE!!! Please join us for a screening of the new PBS Documentary "College Behind Bars" by Ken Burns

About this Event

Please join us for a presentation ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2019, with Dr. Erin L. Castro, Judge Clemens Landau, and Matthew Holman as they discuss Utah Prison Education Project (UPEP) and the state of higher education in Utah’s prison system. UPEP runs yearlong at the prison and courses are offered on a two-semester schedule. At this time, UPEP is a non-credit program and is actively fundraising to cover costs associated with enrollment. Incarcerated students are not asked to financially pay for participation in UPEP.

In addition to this panel discussion, we will be showing the first half of College Behind Bars, a film series directed by award-winning filmmaker Lynn Novick, produced by Sarah Botstein and Ken Burns. College Behind Bars tells the story of a small group of incarcerated men and women struggling to earn college degrees and turn their lives around in one of the most rigorous and effective prison education programs in the United States – the Bard Prison Initiative. Shot over four years in maximum and medium security prisons in New York State, the four-hour film takes viewers on a stark and intimate journey into one of the most pressing issues of our time – our failure to provide meaningful rehabilitation for the over two million Americans living behind bars.

There will be food. You are on your own for drinks though. And there will hopefully be 3 hours of CLE, pending approval. Our apologies about the change in the date of this event.
